WFMW: Feeds?

This week it's the backwards edition of Works for me Wednesday, which means that I get to ask you all a question instead of sharing a tip with you.

First, let me say, I consider myself a pretty computer literate person. I can figure out most things given enough time. Asking this question is kind of a blow to my ego, but, I'd rather get the answer and move on with life. ;)

For the life of me, I can't get the hang of using feeds. I can subscribe to feeds via my browser, via Google, via a couple of other locations. I'm always reading blogs where people are talking about reading through their feeds, and I'm feeling clueless. If I click on "subscribe to this feed" on a blog, sometimes it takes me to Feedburner, sometimes to Google. How does that help me? I am apparently missing something here... and I'm sure once someone answers this I'm going to feel really silly. So... could somebody fill me in? What's the easiest way to set up and read feeds? Is there one particular site I should use? Am I the most clueless person ever? :)

Ask your own burning question or share more advice over at the backwards edition of WFMW at Rocks in my Dryer!

  1. When you click on "subscribe to my feed" it should take you to a screen that lets you decide how you want to subscribe. There are a lot of different ways. I use bloglines, but I have heard that google reader is good also.

So, when I click on subscribe, I choose to subscribe with bloglines. Then, since bloglines recognizes my computer, it adds the subscription to my account. I log in to bloglines to see when my subscriptions have posted.

The blogroll on my site is actually a link to my bloglines account if you want to see what it looks like. Also, you can read more about it on a post I wrote here:

I hope that helps. If not, email me or comment again on my blog and I can try to answer more.

Thanks for the advice on my blog. It really helps!

  2. I don't know a whole lot about feeds, but I use Bloglines . You can subscribe to different blogs and anytime they post it will tell you there's something new to read. It's very easy to use and I love it so far!

  3. I am SO GLAD you asked that. I have been trying to figure it out too. I'm going to follow the instructions you got!

  4. I second bloglines! They have a button you can drag onto your toolbar that says "subscribe w/bloglines", so when i find a site I like, I just click that button instead of looking around for their feed, etc.

  5. I also use bloglines. I have a button on my sidebar of my blog that if you click it...it should add me to your feeder (if you so choose). It just saves a person from copy/pasting the link in their feed :).

I only use bloglines to see who has updated their blog so i can go read. I don't read off of bloglines. I like to actually go TO the blog itself to read! :)

  7. Thank you for your detailed comment to my questions. One of my questions was also about blog readers so I can't personally answer, but so far most people seem to like Bloglines and Google the best.
