Recent Reads: The Exceptional Life

The Exceptional Life: 8 Powerful Steps to Experiencing God's Best for You
by Stephen Arterburn is a what I would describe as a shiny, happy, positive, Christian self-help book.  I enjoyed the author's writing style- pleasant, funny, often adding in little anecdotes about his own life with ADHD and all the problems that ADHD causes him here and there.

Mr. Arterburn believes that what holds most people back from totally enjoying God's blessings in life is that we are holding onto one of eight things, including guilt and shame, resentment, fear, anger, and isolation.  If we can just "let go" of whichever of these things is blocking us, Mr. Arterburn believes that we will then be wide open to fully embrace all that God offers us.

While I like the idea, in my reality, it's not that simple.  I also disagreed with  his concept of just forgiving yourself for minor transgressions against others and moving on... I feel like it's important to face that sin and that's why we have a feeling of guilt.

While I didn't agree with everything the author said, I did enjoy his writing style, and I would read another book by Stephen Arterburn.   A quick peek at Amazon showed me that he has quite a few to choose from, including both fiction and non-fiction books.
