What are your tricks for getting/keeping the Christmas spirit?

After 15 years as Chief Elf at work (AKA: Activity Coordinator in a nursing home), I am frequently asked for ideas on what to give to residents as Christmas gifts. With limited storage space and limited abilities, it can sometimes be hard to come up with ideas for loved ones. Here are a few of the best tried and true ideas that I have seen and given myself over the years:Remembering loved ones in nursing facilities always works for me!

P.S. Something else that works for me is helping a friend win a contest. My friend Sarah is a finalist in a Christmas tree contest. I'd love it if you'd go Vote for "Growing For Christ: decorated by little hands"-- thanks! :)
Ta Da's: The cards. The cards. What can I say, except that right now I think I'll have photo cards printed at the drugstore next year? :) I actually love how these turned out, though, and I've received several nice compliments on them. On some I added glitter on Love, Hope, and Peace and some of the berries... and then later I decided that I liked them just as well without the glitter, so I didn't glitter the second half. (I wish I'd decided that before the first batch, LOL, to save myself some time!) I made about 45 of these. Some had dark red layering, some had dark green, but otherwise they were all pretty much the same.

I whipped this up in about forty-five minutes last weekend for my mother-in-law for Christmas. My local JoAnn's is going out of business, and had the pre-cut fleece kits marked down to $10. I couldn't pass that deal up! I've made the fleece blankets several times before, so it was quick and easy for me to cut the fringe and tie this one off. She loved it! And yes, she's a 2x Breast Cancer survivor, so the design was perfect for her.

In my family, it's tradition for each child to pick out a new Christmas ornament each year. My parents started this tradition because when they were newlyweds, they had no ornaments for their first tree, and no money to buy any, so they had to make their own. (Which I think is a neat story anyways, but that's not the point here.) Their thinking was that if the kids collected a new ornament every year, when they were out on their own, they'd have a good start to filling their own trees with ornaments. And as an adult, it's been fun for me to look back over my childhood ornaments- I have everything from a Wonder Woman ornament to a couple of Victorian ones. The phases of my life are represented in ornaments. :)
We've carried on the ornament-a-year tradition with our kids. Last year, I had a dose of inspiration as to how I wanted to record who got what each year. I bought two small Christmas photo albums- the ones that are just the size of 4x6" photos. Each year, I'm taking a picture of my children holding their ornament, and on the back of the photo, I'm jotting notes about why they chose that ornament, where we found it, etc.

P.S. For those of you who don't know, I work two days a week as the Activity Director at a nursing home. This was my full-time job before I had kids.
Well, my best tried and true tip for Christmas time is to NOT be finishing your handmade Christmas cards at 1am six days before Christmas. ::ahem::
But, since I assume that most of you are smart enough to know better, I'll share another tip that I swiped from Organized Christmas. Cynthia Townley Ewer suggests preparing a Christmas morning box, containing all the things you'll need when unwrapping gifts. She suggests including trash bags, box cutter, scissors, and a notepad & pen for recording gifts.
My plan is to assemble a basket over the next few days with some of these items that we always need... like wire cutters for the umpteen wires that hold toys captive in their boxes. I think I'll also put the camera and extra batteries there, so there's no last-minute searching when I want to capture the Christmas morning smiles. It will also be nice to just grab the scissors or wire cutters and start freeing up the toys, rather than spending ten minutes saying "hold on, Daddy will get it open soon". :)

P.S. If you need a quick icing recipe for decorating your Christmas cookies, I posted my favorite one over at my cooking blog this morning. It dries hard and shiny, which makes for very pretty cookies! That recipe definitely works for me!

My Ta-Da's this week: I redid my plan for the front panel of the cards, incorporating a tag shaped vellum piece. I found a great source for free templates and patterns. I spent waaaay too much time looking at other people's cards online and not enough time working on my own... oh, wait.. I guess that doesn't really belong under my accomplishments, does it? LOL!!
I have photos this week- but right now, I have a one year-old climbing in and out of my lap. So, I'll add the photos later on when he's napping and I have two free hands! EDITED TO ADD: Ok, so the photos still haven't made it online- soon, I promise! :)
