Comfort Food: Cube Steak

Yesterday I tried a new way of preparing cube steak in the crockpot, and the recipe is a keeper!  I love cube steak if it's tender, hate it when it's tough.  This was so tender that I could cut it with minimal pressure from the side of my fork.   (I found the idea for using water online-- the rest of this recipe I changed and adapted to suit my family.)

Crockpot Cube Steak
1 lb. cube steak
small amount flour
a few shakes of seasoned salt
1 large onion, chopped
1 packet beef gravy mix
1 1/2 cups water

Add flour & seasoned salt to a gallon sized zip-top bag and mix.  Shake each cube steak in the bag to coat, then brown in oil in hot skillet.   While cube steaks are browning, chop onion into thick slices and layer in bottom of crockpot.  Add the browned cube steaks & scraped bits from skillet into crockpot on top of the onions, then pour in 1 1/2 cups water.   Cook on low all day (mine cooked about 5 hours).  Half an hour before serving, remove cube steaks to a platter to keep warm.  Stir in the packet of gravy mix.  Allow gravy to thicken, serve, and enjoy!

I served this with mashed potatoes and steamed broccoli.   It was easy and delicious, perfect for this cold, snowy weather.

I am attempting to post daily in January for NaBloPoMo's theme of "Best".

  1. Sounds delicious! I think I've got some cube steak in the freezer that's just asking to be made into this! Thanks, Amy!
