My tip today is something that has really worked well for my family- we have a designated "church bag" for DD (age 4). The items in her bag are for church ONLY... and the bag stays in the car, to assure that she doesn't sneak it out at home.
Her bag contains: a Bible story book , a 5x7" coloring book, a set of colored pencils, and a Pretty Pony. She uses crayons and markers at home, so the colored pencils are a special treat. Periodically I switch out the book and toys for something different.
The bag itself is about 9x6"- just the right size for her to carry herself. Hers unzips to create a dollhouse, with felt characters to put in the house. (Unfortunately, that bag is no longer sold, or I'd give you the link.) I've been shopping around to create a similar bag for my son (age 1), though, and I think this 9x6" Bible Backpack or maybe even this My Soft Church Playset will work for him.

Very good idea! We do something similar, although I had never thought about the fact that keeping in the van was helping keep it 'new' to him... I just kept it in there so we would always be sure to have it! :)

Our pastor's daughter was about 4 when she sat with our family. (Both her parents were involved in the service). We had a church bag for her and she loved it! One of the things she especially liked in the bag was a Lauri crepe rubber alphabet puzzle. You can get them at many educational stores and from homeschool catalogs. (I included a link to the Lauri site for those not familiar with them.)
