Artificial pancreas?

JDRF announced a couple of weeks ago that they were partnering with Animas to develop the first artificial pancreas.   This has been a hot topic among diabetic communities online ever since their announcement, but I wanted to share it here for those who aren't involved in those communities.   From the JDRF press release (emphasis mine):
The first-generation system would be partially automated, utilizing an insulin pump connected wirelessly with a continuous glucose monitor (CGM). The CGM continuously reads glucose levels through a sensor with a hair-thin sensor wire inserted just below the skin, typically on the abdomen.  The sensor would transmit those readings to the insulin pump, which delivers insulin through a small tube or patch on the body.  The pump would house a sophisticated computer program that will address safety concerns during the day and night, by helping prevent hypoglycemia and extreme hyperglycemia.  It would slow or stop insulin delivery if it detected blood sugar was going too low and would increase insulin delivery if blood sugar was too high.  For example, the system would automatically discontinue insulin delivery to help prevent hypoglycemia, and then automatically resume insulin delivery based on a specific time interval (i.e., 2 hours) and/or glucose concentration.  It will also automatically increase insulin delivery to reduce the amount of time spent in the hyperglycemic range and return to a pre-set basal rate once glucose concentrations have returned to acceptable levels.
If you're not familiar with the terms, the CGM and pump already are commonly used.   However, the CGM currently can be used just to monitor blood glucose levels... it still requires a human to read it, calculate the dosages, and program those into the pump numerous times each day.  It's the automation of the process-- that the sensor and pump might work without human calculations-- that's the breakthrough.

Honestly, the idea gives me chills.   To imagine that my daughter might one day have a sensor to correct her blood sugar automatically 24/7.... just, wow.   I know better than to get my hopes up too high, of course, but the $8 million slated for this project has to be a step in the right direction, right?   I'll be praying for this project!

Virtual March for Life

I used to attend the real march in Washington, DC-- I went for several years in a row.  It was an amazing experience, to stand there surrounded by of thousands of other people who believe in the sanctity of human life.

In this season of my life, though, it's just not practical for me to make it to the DC march.  That's why I liked this idea-- AUL Action is hosting the first Virtual March for Life.

It will only take seconds, sign up, select your own "avatar" and then invite your pro-life friends and family to participate as well. It's the best way to "be there" even if you can't be there.

Join the Virtual March for Life. Show your support for life. Make your voice heard.

WFMW: frugal purse organizer

I have admired various (expensive) purse organizers forever.  I always thought it would be handy to just move one bag with all my stuff from one purse to another.... but, of course, I wasn't about to shell out $25+ for it.

A couple of weeks ago at a local discount store I bumped into my perfect (frugal) solution:  a mesh cosmetic bag with three outer zippered compartments.  (Mine is a Podulars brand, but unfortunately I couldn't find a link for you.)   It's perfect-- small and lightweight, but with three different sized compartments to separate my stuff--- medications, lip balm, pens, etc.   It fits just right in my smallest purse, with enough room for my wallet and phone to go next to it.  And best of all, I only paid about $6.... much better than those expensive organizers!

Finding frugal solutions to life's minor annoyances.... that definitely works for me!   Check out more great WFMW tips at We Are That Family.

I'm in need of a bubble.

You know, the kind that would insulate my household from any more germs or illnesses?  Like Bubble Boy.... or maybe like Sandy's dome in Sponge Bob?

Seriously.... someone in my house has been on prescription medication for acute illness every single day since the first week of December.   We've gone through pink eye, ear infections, bronchitis, c-diff, and a breathing problem.   I've used enough bleach that we should be buying stock in the Clorox company.  Ugh.

Your prayers for healing and continued health in my home would be appreciated!

Sick House. Again.

Well, I made 15 days of NaBloPoMo and then this terrible flu/cold thing hit me, and I haven't even been online for a few days. I literally slept from Sunday evening until Tuesday morning, only getting up for about an hour in there-- thank goodness my husband was here to take care of the kids!   My son is sick again, too.   He has had one kind of infection or another constantly since the middle of December.   I'm taking him to the doctor yet again today.  I'll be back to blogging when we are all feeling better!

The Male Factor: Book Tour & Giveaway

Publisher's Summary: Many talented women today risk undermining their careers without realizing it, simply because they don’t understand how they are perceived by their male colleagues and customers.  In What Men really Think, best-selling author Shaunti Feldhahn reveals the inner reality behind men’s views — the unspoken expectations that no man would dare to publicly acknowledge, and no woman would learn from an HR department.

Since I only work part-time, and in a woman-dominated field (nursing home) at that, I was curious as to what I would take away from this book. I found that much of it I already knew... for example, the fact that most men support a woman's choice to work or stay at home, but they are frustrated when a woman can't seem to make up her own mind and the work "team" suffers because she waffles back and forth on her priorities.    Many men find themselves uncertain how to best deal with a woman who wears her emotions on her sleeve at work... but then again, I think many men have that problem outside of the workplace, too!  ;)

If this sounds like a book that you would enjoy, you're in luck!  The kind folks at WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group have provided an extra copy of this book for me to give away to one of my readers.  To enter, just leave a comment telling me about your current job... are you a stay at home mom?  Part time employee?  Full time?   This giveaway will end on January 20th at midnight.

I'm going to see Sarah Palin!

Going Rogue: An American LifeI'm going to see Sarah Palin!   Whoo hoo!  If you know me at all, you'll know that I am a big Palin supporter.  I've already made plans to work on her Presidential campaign in 2012... now we just have to pursuade her to run!  ;)

A few days ago my sister forwarded me an announcement about the upcoming event.   I asked my husband, and he didn't mind if I went without him.... so, it's official.   The price of my ticket includes a reception and a picture with Sarah Palin (I'm guessing that's a group photo- ??)  at the Ohio Right to Life benefit in March!   I can't remember the last time I was this excited!

Ranch Potatoes & Memes Galore

There are SO many fun food memes on Tuesdays!   Check out Tasty Tuesday @ Balancing Beauty and Bedlam,  Tuesdays at the Table @ All the Small Stuff, and  Tempt My Tummy Tuesday @ Blessed with Grace.  I'm linking up to all three today.  I could probably spend a couple of hours browsing through all the yummy recipes!

I'm sharing a recipe here that is currently cooking away in my kitchen.  It's a family favorite, and so easy!  We'll be having ours tonight with this new-to-us  recipe for Delicious Drumsticks and English peas.    This is a pretty frugal meal, too-- I got the drumsticks on clearance for $1.24 (package of 6), the salad dressing on sale for $1/ bottle (won't use the whole bottle), and the other ingredients are all pantry staples.   I'm not good at tracking those exact costs, but all together, I think this meal will come in well under $5 to feed the four of us.

RANCH POTATOES
4-6 baking potatoes, sliced
1 large onion, diced
2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
1 small bottle ranch salad dressing

Place potatoes and onion slices in a large pot, cover with water, and boil until tender. Drain water. In a round glass casserole dish layer about half of the potatoes/onions, cover with a thin layer of ranch dressing, then a layer of cheese. Repeat layers, ending with cheese. Bake at 350 for 20-25 minutes. Sometimes I also garnish the top with dried chives.

$.25 gift wrap

During my grocery shopping trip to Kroger today I noticed that they still had two tables of Christmas stuff, marked 75% off.  I wasn't too excited until I noticed the wrapping paper... they still had three large boxes full of colorful rolls marked at $.25 each! I grabbed about ten rolls.  Even better, some of them are patterns I can use for other occasions: gold stripes, white with blue foil presents (perfect for winter birthdays), and a red/gold flourish pattern.    If, like me, you think you've missed out on clearance wrapping paper for the year- keep your eyes open... you might find a good deal yet!

Comfort Food: Cube Steak

Yesterday I tried a new way of preparing cube steak in the crockpot, and the recipe is a keeper!  I love cube steak if it's tender, hate it when it's tough.  This was so tender that I could cut it with minimal pressure from the side of my fork.   (I found the idea for using water online-- the rest of this recipe I changed and adapted to suit my family.)

Crockpot Cube Steak
1 lb. cube steak
small amount flour
a few shakes of seasoned salt
1 large onion, chopped
1 packet beef gravy mix
1 1/2 cups water

Add flour & seasoned salt to a gallon sized zip-top bag and mix.  Shake each cube steak in the bag to coat, then brown in oil in hot skillet.   While cube steaks are browning, chop onion into thick slices and layer in bottom of crockpot.  Add the browned cube steaks & scraped bits from skillet into crockpot on top of the onions, then pour in 1 1/2 cups water.   Cook on low all day (mine cooked about 5 hours).  Half an hour before serving, remove cube steaks to a platter to keep warm.  Stir in the packet of gravy mix.  Allow gravy to thicken, serve, and enjoy!

I served this with mashed potatoes and steamed broccoli.   It was easy and delicious, perfect for this cold, snowy weather.

Spam, anyone?

I'm just curious... is anyone else getting hit with a ton of spam comments recently?  Over the last ten days, I'd guess that I've deleted a dozen or so spam comments.  Some are advertising male enhancement products, and quite a few have been in a foreign language (French, I think).   I'm not sure why I'm being hit so much recently, but I'll be keeping comment moderation on.   I used to have the word verification, but spam still got through.  I'd still like to know why there's been so much of it lately, though!

Blog Book Tour: The One Day Way

The One-Day Way: Today Is All the Time You Need to Lose All the Weight You Want is pretty much summed up in the title: the focus is on making positive changes one day at a time.   From overeating to addictions to destructive habits, the author truly believes that you can change anything... but focusing on six-month plans isn't the way to do it.  She outlines positive steps you can take to address various issues (nutrition, exercise, etc.), but reminds us that you have to focus on the small steps you can take today, and not get overwhelmed thinking about the future or the past.

This isn't the first book to remind us to break things down into managable daily pieces ("baby steps" from Flylady are based on a similar concept) if we want to make big changes.  There wasn't anything earth-shattering in Ms Hobbs' ideas, but they are based on common sense approaches to struggles that every one of us faces.   If you need a reminder to give yourself your due credit and see each step towards change as a victory,  then this is the book for you.

My copy of The One-Day Way was provided free for me by Multnomah Books, a division of Random House, in exchange for my review & participation in this blog tour.

Booking Through Thursday

What books did you get for Christmas (or whichever holiday you may have celebrated last month)?  I got two books that I had been wanting: Going Rogue: An American Life by Sarah Palin, and,  A Simple Life by Wanda Brunstetter.  I'm about half-way through the Amish book- it's very light reading, broken up into short 1-3 page stories.   I can't wait to dig into Palin's book, but, I had some review books that I need to finish first in order to post reviews by the deadlines.

PaperBackSwap.com - Book Club to Swap, Trade & Exchange Books for Free.Do you usually ask for books on gift-giving occasions or do you prefer to buy them yourself?  I rarely buy any books for myself, but that's because I have a knee-deep stack next to my nightstand waiting to be read.  :)    (I do love to hang out in bookstores, but I try not to buy any when I have a stack at home waiting to be read.)   I get most of my books through PaperBackSwap.com (free), through the various companies that I review for (also free), and through the library.    I also keep a running wishlist on Amazon and I'm always thrilled when someone blesses me with a gift from that list.

Visit Booking Through Thursday to play along and share your answers to these book-related questions.

WFMW: Prep for surgery?

It's the backwards edition of WFMW, meaning that I get to ask YOU a question.

I'm just recovering from a minor abdominal surgery that I had on Monday, and I've learned that I will be having a bigger surgery in the near future.  While this one was minor (laparoscopic), I'm still finding that I keep forgetting about my restrictions and doing more than I should.... like picking up a child or lifting something, and then I land myself right back on the couch in pain.   I probably would be off of the pain medications today if I hadn't overdone it yesterday.  It's frustrating, to say the least!

What are your tips for next time.... when I know I'll be laid up for 2-4 weeks?   I'm going to try and get some meals in the freezer, and I'll have family around part of the time to help out, but otherwise... what's your best advice for someone getting ready for surgery?

My Family= the Best.

Having a loving DH to hold my hand, sisters to help watch the kids, and parents there to lend a hand as needed.... I am blessed, and I know it.

(If you're reading this post, it means that I'm still recovering from yesterday's surgery, but I set this one up ahead of time because I wanted to make sure my "best" post went up today!)

If you need me, I'll be sleeping.

Exploratory surgery.  It sounds kind of fun, like an adventure, right?  Hmmmm.  I don't think it will be fun, but, unfortunately, it's necessary.  So, I'm off to the hospital today, and hopefully I'll be home asleep in my own bed tonight.   I guess finally taking care of myself is the best way to start the new year, right?

Day 3

Ack.... day 3 and I nearly forgot to do a NaBloPoMo post.  Does it count if I just post for the sake of posting?  LOL.  It's going to have to count for now, because I really need to get to bed!
